THE SERIE A 2009-2010 FOOTBALL LEAGUE FORMAT
Serie A is the highest football (Calcio) league in Italy. The new format was introduced in the 2004/05 season, when the number of teams was increased from 18 to 20. The teams play a total of 380 matches in a season, with three points awarded for a victory and one for a draw. Each team plays each other twice, once at their home ground and once at their opponents, making a season-total of 38 games. All games in the last four rounds of the season must be played at the same time. The team ending with the most points gains the Italian Serie A title (Scudetto).
According to the final standings, the first two teams enter the group phase of the UEFA Champions League, while the third and fourth have to go through qualifying rounds to enter the competition. The fifth and sixth placed clubs, as well as the Italian Cup winners, earn a place in the UEFA Cup. The bottom three teams in Serie A at the end of the season are relegated to the Italian Second Division, Serie B. The Serie B champions and the runners-up are promoted directly, while the third promoted team is determined by a play-off between the four teams finishing from third through sixth place.
